🏆 5 Brain Break Activities for Enhanced Classroom Learning
1. Quick Stretching Exercises
Quick stretching exercises are a fantastic way to break up the monotony of the day and get students moving. They promote physical well-being and help students refocus on learning. It’s an easy, no-prep way to incorporate a quick Brain Break.
I have found great value in implementing a quick stretch break in the middle of long 90-minute class periods or in between lesson activities. Simple stretches or yoga poses can help students release physical tension and refocus. Here is an easy to follow guide for seated stretching exercises. (Link)
2. Mindfulness Moments
Mindfulness moments are like a mental reset button in the classroom. I appreciate how they create a calm and focused atmosphere, benefiting both students' stress levels and their ability to concentrate. This brain break involves taking a few minutes for breathing exercises or silent meditation.
A helpful tip that I have learned from my experience is to have the students clear their desks of everything and then turn the classroom lights off to set the tone. Here is a script that I have read to my students while playing relaxing music. (Link)
3. Energizing Movement Breaks
Energizing movement breaks inject a burst of energy into the class. They are a fun way to re-energize students and keep their enthusiasm for learning high.
Use this list to get ideas for incorporating brief, high-energy activities, like a quick dance or a series of jumping jacks, to invigorate students and boost their energy levels. (Link)
4. Silent Reading Time
Silent reading time is a cherished moment of tranquility in the classroom. It provides students with the opportunity to unwind, explore their interests, and build a love for reading.
Offer a period of silent reading as a calming break. This allows students to relax with a book of their choice, promoting both literacy and tranquility.
5. Finish the Story or Picture
This brain break encourages students to unleash their imagination. I find it incredible how such unstructured activities can spark creativity and refresh student minds.
Give the students a fun drawing prompt or writing prompt and allow the students to work for a short period of time. I typically let the students share out their funny drawings and written responses.

✏️ Steal this Classroom Hack:
đź‘Ť Why I love this hack:
Classroom timers are invaluable tools for educators. Timers can assist teachers with smooth transitions between class activities, reduce downtime, and maintain a steady pace throughout the lesson. However, my favorite aspect of using a timer is the sense of urgency it creates for students to complete their work.
My favorite feature of this particular timer is that it is magnetic enabling you to stick it to your whiteboard. The giant numbers and loud beeper also make it ideal for class management during tests, group work, or quiet reading time.
